Psalms 100
A Psalm of praise.
Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
I have recently re-discovered the richness of joy and peace when reading the Psalms. This Psalm got my attention during a church service not long ago. It depicts God in such a glorious and majestic way. Something we need to remember and reflect on every day.
Many years ago, when I was yet a junior in nursing school, I started to study the Bible book by book and verse by verse. My journey began with the book of Psalms and for about two years I delved into these poems and songs of adoration, and of joy, and of sorrow. That has put me on the right path with God and I have understood who God is and how dependent man is to God. That laid the foundation of my Bible study from thereon. When we open the Bible, God’s Word, having this picture well painted in our mind, heart and soul, of God being eternal, majestic and glorious, His Word will resound deeply in us, feed our needs and then will result in praising Him with songs and prayers.
Thoughts for today
Verses 1-3
What a great poem full of doctrine and spiritual food. The author calls the lands and the people to make a joyful noise unto the Lord. To serve the Lord with gladness and to go in His presence, the Holy Temple, with singing. Because the Lord is God and very interestingly how the writer expands this thought. He made us and we are His. We have not made ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Not only do these verses make a direct call to Genesis, but they speak truth. The people are the most wonderful creation work of God for a special purpose, not given to any other creation. The psalmist succeeds in depicting this fully. Knowing who God is, means to have a personal relationship with Him. Having a personal relationship with God, gets you to unveil His character which will empower you to grasp Him and become more dependent on God and less independent of God. Ultimately, to praise Him for who God is, and who He is in your life and daily living.
Verses 4-5
The honour of serving God and having the ability to do so in public is yet to be fully understood. We enter in God’s presence with thanksgiving, first of all. In His courts, we sing the praise and are thankful and His name is to be blessed. Because in the presence of God, the glories and the halleluiahs are filling the place from the gates to the altar. This is because the Lord is good, and his mercy is everlasting, moreover, his faithfulness and truth endure through all generations. Here we discover God’s character, that he is merciful forever. His hand is stretched over the generations of people with the assurance of protection.
Notice, in this psalm as in many others, the specific way to describe the praise and the motives to acclaim God’s name. Verses 1 and 2 are the praise and the motive is found in verse 3. Then verse 4 is the praise, and again the motive is found in verse 5.
What a great God is God! May the Lord work in our hearts, minds and souls to become the psalmist. Having a deep knowledge of God. The deeper we know God, the higher the praise will be to God, inside our being and in public places, God will be forever glorified.
